I fear the worst

They should give it a turbo 5 cylinder, with a manual only, and RWD. It would be amazing. Oh and it would sound like a beast!

Sppoooooooooool

I fear this is true. And I fear they will sell extremely well to the yuppie crowd. Most of all, I fear they will catch on here at Oppo, and the fundamental morals (manual transmission, fun to drive) will start to slip away...
I'm not crying. Really, that's just dust. Damn you Volvo!

I work for Volvo and my sources tell me this car could be coming sooner than we think. Also, theres. no hybrid, no N/A, no CVT or no FWD. If what I'm hearing is correct it will be using the drive E turbo/supercharged 2.0 4cyl and feature AWD as well as the new Volvo 8speed auto, possibly a 6MT as well. We will see what happens when the car comes to fruition but let's just all hope Volvo does right by us!

I really think Volvo has two target demographics:
-Children of somewhat affluent parents who want them to be extremely safe
-Parents of those children who want to be extremely safe
Neither of those groups will give two shits about anything but styling and (you guessed it) safety.

Oh, just watched the video! That was pornographic. I'm talking about the ones you see at dealerships where a shift knob is nowhere to be seen... I love old Volvos, but let's be honest. Old Volvo =/= New Volvo.
New Volvo = -(Old Volvo/2), to be precise.

TURBO 5 CYLINDER GET IT DONE!! I don't care how, or who has to die, just do it!

I am okay with this. If the concept doesn't change much and what your sources say is true, I'll need to pick one up on the used market once I get out of college. It would be the perfect "I now have to do real work, not make stupid decisions, and support my life" car.

From what I see so far, it's ALL wrong. They should go retro styling on this like the big 3 do with their muscle cars. That's not even exactly what I'd like them to do, but something more in that direction. Something of a modern interpretation of a P1800 and by that I mean, it should look a lot like a P1800.

I don't expect a manual, it seems volvo doesn't like manuals anymore...
Do they even sell anything with a manual still?
![]() 02/26/2014 at 21:26 |

Not in the US but globally they sell manuals in everything they make. Hell you can have a manual XC90 in Europe. I guess Volvo feels Americans don't want manuals but the amount of people that harass me about Volvos lack of manual trans in the US says otherwise. I will certainly keep harassing the factory reps for manual transmissions and Diesel engines on behalf of all of us on Oppo and Jalopnik.

Maybe they'll reboot The Saint, too. Roger Moore must be pretty bored these days..

Ah I got yeah. I don't think the affulent parent would look much at these cars. At my school there are more BMW 3 series and C class benzs then there are Mustangs, and there are a lot of Mustangs.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 21:31 |

They could do that...and sell 3 of them. All with Oppo and SwedeSpeed decals in the window.

If you are telling the truth I love you forever. My first car was a first year S60 that I loved. Until recently I owned a 78 242 with a 16V swap and I'm always on the lookout for a clean p1800es. If Volvo makes this car I will immediately trade in my Focus ST for it. Immediately. And I love my Focus ST, so that's saying a lot.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 21:38 |

They would sell at least 4.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 21:38 |

Well this is what my factory reps have told me and that comes from top brass. The manual in the US is a long shot but the rest is firmly cemented I'm told.

Harass them for a true successor to the 04-07 SR and VR, not this R-Design bullshit.

If you're pulling our leg...
(No, probably not. It would suck for us though.)

Please make the manual happen. And those awesome plaid seats

I will do my best!
![]() 02/26/2014 at 22:21 |

Haha!
This is the truth as I know it. The info has been passed from various factory reps at Volvo NA to me so let's just hope Volvo isn't pulling our collective legs because products like this is what gets customers in the door and in turn gets me paid so I can afford to have one of these!

Any talk on a ballpark of what the price point might be? I'm certainly interested in seeing where this will sit in the line-up compared to everything else.

That would be so good. My favorite Vulva.

Pricing is always the last thing to be discussed but when more info trickles down to me I will be sure to alert everyone on Oppo.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 22:36 |

Understandable, keep up the good work, sir. Now if you were to take a random shot in the dark, where would you place this price-wise compared to the current North American line-up?

For a while you could have the V50 with a 225hp T5 engine, awd and a 6MT and boy was that car fun to drive! They never sold well but the people who bought them will never get rid of them. The manual Volvo is a low volume proposition but there are a small very vocal group of Volvo loyalists who harass Volvo to bring back the manual trans. I will continue to motion for manual transmissions and Diesel engines at product meetings.

Stab in the dark, upper $30k to low 40k range. I could see it and the coupe version as a replacement for the recently dead C70 as Volvo's top range sporty coupe offering.

The R design offers 25hp and 30ftlb over the standard T6 versions, it has stiffer suspension and thicker sway bars plus versions styling enhancements in and out and big wheels just like the Rs of the past. We were spoiled by the 50hp boost over the T5 version offered by the S60/V70R but let us not forget the 850R barely made 20hp more than a T5 standard like the one I drive. This year you can grab one of the limited production Polestar S60/V60s coming to the US which offer even more performance. I will submit to them a reboot of the real R series though!
![]() 02/26/2014 at 22:48 |
|
The SR and VR had like 80hp over the T5. Plus, they had MANUALS!
I am sure the R design doesn't have the 4C suspension either.
You don't work at Volvo's NA HQ do you? Its an hour north of me tucked away on the NJ/NY boarder.

Literally everything in that captioned picture has no chance of happening.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 22:52 |

The 2004-2007 S60/V70R had 50hp more than the T5 version. 300hp for R, 250 for T5 and 215 for 2.5T. The 850R if you remember only had 240hp, a modest 15hp more than the 225hp standard T5.
And no I'm not working out of Volvo HQ I'm just a low level manager at a Volvo dealer but I deal directly with factory reps from both Sweden and the New Jersey Volvo NA HQ.

It's a Volvo man! It will certainly be baby friendly. Volvo may be aiming for new clientele but they will never isolate the parents who value what Volvo offers.
![]() 02/26/2014 at 23:09 |

I'm pleasantly surprised to see the manual having a chance option! Sad that the 5 bangers are going away, but a twincharged 2.0L isn't short on quirkiness either! Count me excited!
![]() 02/26/2014 at 23:14 |

And last week we had a product meeting where all three concepts were discussed in depth as were future plans. I can't say a lot but the future at Volvo looks very bright!
![]() 02/26/2014 at 23:23 |

The twin charged Drive E engine is really something! Gobs of power and it has excellent all around drivability. Power and torque through the entire rev range! Best part is it's a completely in house Volvo design with no outside influence. I could go in depth about all the advancements of this engine but the important part is that you won't notice the lack of a larger engine and you'll still be getting damn near 30mpg in a car with over 300hp. It's a no compromise situation!
I will miss the wailing old T5 though as it's my favorite engine of all time. 1994-2015 is 21 years of reliable service and it never felt outdated thanks to Volvo gradually perfecting it. I feel the sads as I have a 1996 855 Turbo sportswagon featuring the very vocal but stout 2.3 high pressure T5 engine. 220k miles, original engine, turbo and autobox running 14psi on a tuned ECU and very minor supporting mods. Daily driven too! And it has a spoiler so you know it's the real deal. :)

Oh for some reason I thought the T5's were only like 220hp. I haven't looked into any past the SR's because thats what I hope to pick up.
I'd love to get a 06-07 Sonic blue SR with the M66 and either nordkap or atacama interior, but I know I have about a 1 in 50, if that, chance of finding what I want. So I might have to settle on a clean black silver or dark grey car.
![]() 02/27/2014 at 00:38 |
|
You were thinking of the 2.5T. The T5 is even more rare than the R but it was FWD with 250hp. There was a manual option on the T5 as well and those are even more rare. I see the sonic blue Rs occasionally so if you search you can probably find a good one. Hell I spent about a year looking for a clean well maintained red 855 turbo but I did find one!
![]() 02/27/2014 at 00:40 |

Anytime I find a sonic SR its an auto. One guy in PA, about 6 hours west, was selling a 90k mile 06 SR M66/Nordkap for like 8 grand just to get rid of it. Wish I was in a position to buy at the time, car would have made a great daily.
I see plenty of 2.5T and T5's around, I know the T5 had the 4C option but I've never seen one of those in person. Not sure if I've ever found one with a manual in person either.
